Local Project Episode 18: The Glass Cavalry

Last week on The Local Project, host Jake Videmschek talked to The Glass Cavalry, a new import from Columbia that describes themselves as a “Weezer-Pink Floyd hot fudge sundae”. Here you can hear clips from the interview about the band’s origins and what they’ve noticed about moving into Saint Louis’ music scene, along with clips of Cuomo-Waters desserts in MP3 form.

Local Project Episode 17: Roundheels Return

Roundheels made their debut in Episode 4 almost exactly a year ago, and we’ve been following them ever since. Members have changed and songs have been re-recorded, and now they’re on the brink of a new album and building a new record label. We check in with the band (now Brendan Corchran with vocals and guitar, Jacob Lewis on guitar, Eric Moore on drums, and recent addition Kyle Christians on bass) and discuss their progress, the re-recording process, forming a new label, the resurgence of vinyl, and Saint Louis’ challenging lack support for local music compared to other cities.

COMING SOON: The Local Project asks “What If…?”

What if time does not exist? What if the European Renaissance were based on Asian Culture? What if an alien species visited Earth?

This coming Thursday, a collection of students at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri are launching their first installment of The What If… Conference during which questions such as these will be turned loose.

A series of eight minute presentations will be followed by free-for-all breakout sessions and a family-style dinner meeting between the presenters, staff and audience. The goal is a step towards a new era of interaction.

According to www.thewhatifconference.com

“The hopes of “What If…?” are ambitious. It sprung from a desire to encourage a new way of interacting with our world. A manner of interaction in which distinctions between students and professors, as well as barriers between disciplines and differences in individual perspectives aren’t obliterated, but become integrated.”

I will be conducting an interview with The What If… Conference’s co-founder, Andrew R McHugh, next week to review the goals, successes and future of this social-academic venture.

Stay tuned.

Local Project Episode 16: Media Ghost

The Local Project returns for the new year with Media Ghost, a band that mixes elements of prog-rock, 80s synths, and a Lou Reed guitar into a no-wave foundation. Buddy Shumaker (Vocals, guitar, keyboards), Joe Zydiak (bass), and Seth Donnely (drums) came in to talk about the no-wave style and how they blend it in with their own far-flung influences, their writing process, and the lines between studio performances and live performances.
